The arrival of a new baby in the house creates fear of losing their throne and intense anxiety for the older child. The thought "They won't love me anymore" is the foundation of sibling jealousy. During this period, regression behaviors such as bedwetting, thumb sucking, or baby talk can be seen in the older child.
Parental Behaviors to Reduce Jealousy
- Acknowledge Their Feelings: Instead of saying "Don't be jealous of your sibling, they are just a baby," validate their feeling by saying, "I know you are angry because I can't play with you as much as before, I understand you."
- Create Shared Time: When the new baby is sleeping, dedicate that time absolutely to the older child. Do special activities with just the two of you.
- Include Them by Giving Responsibility: Involve them in the care process with small tasks like "Can you bring the baby's diaper?" or "Can you sing them a lullaby?"
Never place the burden of growing up early on them by saying "You are a big sister/brother now"; remember that they are still a child too.
