Just like our physical muscles, our brain atrophies if not used. Keeping the connections between neurons strong and the mind active in old age significantly delays cognitive decline (forgetfulness).
Effective Mental Activities
- Puzzles and Games: Games like Sudoku, crosswords, chess, or card matching work the brain's problem-solving center.
- Learning Something New: Learning the basic words of a new language or picking up a different handicraft hobby (knitting, wood painting) supports the creation of new brain cells.
- Creating a Memory Box: Looking at old photos and trying to remember and narrate the details of those days is an excellent therapy for reviving long-term memory.
A regular reading habit (books, magazines, or newspapers) preserves vocabulary. Doing these activities with grandchildren or a caregiver also increases social interaction.
